Sepsis Awareness in Home Care

What is sepsis?

Sepsis is the body’s life-threatening response to infection that affects 1.7 million people and takes an estimated 270,000 U.S. lives every year.

What are the signs and symptoms of sepsis?

The symptoms of sepsis include:

  • Temperature higher or lower than normal
  • Signs and symptoms of infection
  • Mental decline including confusion and difficulty to rouse
  • Extreme illness, severe pain or shortness of breath.

Why is sepsis awareness important?

Every hour treatment is delayed, the risk of dying from sepsis increases by as much as 8%. However, with rapid diagnosis and treatment, as many as 80% of septic shock patients can be saved.

How does Elara Caring help reduce patients’ risk of sepsis?

Every Elara Caring skilled home health care nurse undergoes training from the Sepsis Alliance, our collaborative partner in sepsis training and education. This program puts lifesaving protocols in place so that every Elara Caring team member, patient and caregiver knows how to identify sepsis and act immediately.
