Finding Comfort in the Season

The holiday season shines with togetherness, reflection and celebration. However, when you’ve lost someone special, it can also bring moments of longing and bittersweet memories.

We know grief doesn’t disappear just because it’s the holidays. Yet, we also believe this season can hold space for both remembrance and renewal.

With care, compassion and creativity, you can find ways to honor your loved one’s memory while still embracing the light of the season.

Emotions You May Feel

It’s normal to experience a wide range of emotions during the holidays. You might feel:

  • Nostalgia as traditions bring back meaningful memories.
  • Loneliness or sadness when you notice the absence of your loved one.
  • Guilt or hesitation about celebrating without them.
  • Gratitude and joy as you reflect on the love and time you shared.

Each feeling is a natural part of healing. Grief and gratitude can exist side by side, and allowing both can help you move forward with grace.

Heartfelt Ways to Honor Your Loved One

Celebrating your loved one’s life can help bring meaning and connection to the season. Consider:

  • Lighting a candle or displaying a photo in their honor as part of your holiday décor.
  • Sharing a favorite story or recipe that reminds you of them.
  • Creating a memory ornament or keepsake that symbolizes their spirit.
  • Giving back in their name through volunteering or donating to a cause they cared about.
  • Setting aside a moment of reflection during your celebrations to remember the love you shared.

These small gestures help weave your loved one’s memory into the fabric of your holiday traditions, keeping their presence close in joyful and meaningful ways.

Creating New Traditions with Heart

As life changes, so do our celebrations. Creating new traditions can bring comfort and a renewed sense of hope. You might:

  • Host a cozy gathering focused on gratitude and storytelling.
  • Start a new activity — like a holiday walk, puzzle night or baking day — to spark fresh memories.
  • Simplify your plans and focus on what brings you peace and joy.
  • Surround yourself with support, whether it’s family, friends or a faith community.

These new traditions don’t replace what came before — they build upon it, helping your heart make room for healing and happiness.
