Balancing Act: Practical Tips to Create a No-Fall Zone
Falls are one of the most common—and preventable—reasons older adults end up in the hospital. Small changes can make a big difference in staying safe and independent. Here’s how you can create a “No-Fall Zone” at home and in your daily routine.
Step Smart: Shoes Matter
The right shoes can make all the difference when it comes to balance:
- Choose low heels with rubber or non-skid soles. Look for shoes that tie or close with Velcro.
- Check for wear and tear. Worn-out soles or loose parts? It’s time to go shoe shopping.
- Wear them! Walking around in socks, hosiery or loose slippers can be slippery business.
Happy Feet, Healthy Steps
Foot health plays a huge role in preventing falls:
- Look for numbness, tingling, sores, bruises or discoloration on your feet. A handheld mirror can help you check the bottoms.
- Schedule an appointment with your doctor if anything seems off.
Pets: Our Furry Friends (and Tripping Hazards!)
We love our pets, but they can get underfoot. Here’s how to keep both of you safe:
- Walk your pet in familiar areas with level ground.
- Keep food bowls, water dishes and toys out of pathways.
- Attach a bell to their collar so you always know when they’re nearby.
Ears: Hear for Balance
Did you know your ears help you stay balanced? Keep them in tip-top shape.
- Schedule regular hearing exams and cleanings.
- Clear hearing helps you stay aware of your surroundings, like approaching people, animals or vehicles.
Eyes: See the Path Ahead
Good vision is essential for staying steady:
- Turn on lights, use nightlights and keep a flashlight handy. Our eyes don’t adjust to lighting changes as quickly as we age.
- Clean your glasses often and wear the right pair for the right task. Reading glasses are great for books but not for walking or climbing stairs.
- Schedule regular eye exams to keep your prescription up to date.
Medication: Know the Side Effects
Some medications—or combinations of them—can cause dizziness.
- Ask your physician or Elara Caring clinician to review your medications.
- Be extra cautious when starting a new medication, as the first few days can increase your fall risk.
Slow Down and Stay Steady
Rushing is a common cause of falls:
- Take your time when getting up from bed or a chair. Standing too quickly can make you dizzy.
- If you often rush to the bathroom or suffer from incontinence, consider using a bedside commode or protective undergarments for peace of mind.
Stop and Ask for Help
If you feel dizzy, don’t push through it.
- Sit down.
- Ask for help.
- Talk to your physician or Elara Caring nurse if dizziness happens often.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
The right tools can make daily life safer:
- Use your walker, cane or other assistive device as prescribed, inside and outside your home.
- Review your home for fall hazards.
- Conserve your energy whenever possible.
