Should You Become a Home Care Nurse? 4 Reasons to Consider It.

What does a home care nurse do?

An in-home nurse cares for patients wherever they call home. Home care nurses provide in home services like symptom management, medication administration, vital sign checks, surgical recovery assistance, wound care, and patient and family education. They assess patient health and work with their physician and other home care colleagues to ensure the patient’s health needs are met.

Is a home care nursing career right for you?

There are many benefits to working in home care, such as flexible schedules and growth of your skillset. But how do you know if home care is the right fit for you? Read on to learn more.

You’re independent.

Home care nurses travel throughout their community to provide care. While team support is always available, it’s important for home care nurses to be able to manage their schedule and caseload on their own each day.

You’re a problem-solver.

A patient’s home environment can impact the care needs they may have. For example, there may be trip hazards or accessibility issues, or a patient may have limited caregiver support to help with daily activities. Home care nurses should observe and assess these issues and work with their home care teammates to find solutions.

You’re a good communicator.

Working in patients’ homes requires nurses to be good communicators with the patient, their family or caregivers, their physician and the rest of the home care team. It’s important that everyone involved in the patient’s care is up to date on their care plan and goals. This requires a high level of communication and effective follow up.

You’re caring and compassionate.

Chances are if you’re a nurse, you already have a caring heart. Working in home care allows nurses to extend that empathy and compassion to the many people they encounter throughout the day – whether that’s fellow community members on the road, a patient’s own family or staff members in a care facility. Home care nurses touch the lives of not only their patients, but also those they meet along the way.
