Sam is 76 years old and was very active until he had a Ischemic Stroke just one week ago. Before his stroke, he enjoyed cooking, gardening, going to church and spending time with his grandchildren. He considered himself healthy and only took medication for high blood pressure and thyroid issues.
When his stroke happened, Sam had a headache, felt dizzy and noticed weakness on one side of his body. He was taken to the hospital and has now returned home to recover with his family.
To help with his recovery, his doctor recommended in-home care.
Sam is improving, but he still has some weakness on his right side. He also has trouble speaking clearly and sometimes has difficulty swallowing.
A care team now visits Sam at home to support his recovery. Through the stroke rehab program, physical and occupational therapists are helping him get stronger and move more safely. They are also teaching him how to do everyday tasks again, like getting in and out of bed, walking and bathing. A speech therapist is working with Sam to improve how he speaks and help him practice swallowing so he can eat and drink more safely.
The team also checks his home for safety and makes sure he has the right equipment and support in place.
With in-home care, Sam can recover in a place that feels comfortable and familiar. He and his family feel hopeful and supported as he works toward getting back to the activities he loves.
A stroke can change everyday life in an instant. You or your loved one may notice changes in movement, speech, memory or energy levels. Some people focus on building strength and getting back to daily routines, while others may need ongoing support or more comfort-focused care over time.
