Warning Signs for Hospice Eligibility

Hospice is not only for patients who have reached a stage of extreme debilitation. There are many smaller signs that indicate a patient may be ready for home hospice care.

What are the most common, subtle hospice eligibility warning signs?

An individual may be hospice eligible if they are:

  • Not improving after a fall or health decline, even with intervention or therapies
  • Needing more assistance with activities of daily living like walking, dressing or bathing
  • More dependent on supportive devices
  • Frequently hospitalized or visiting the ER
  • Losing weight unintentionally
  • Experiencing a decreased appetite or swallowing issues
  • Have decreased stamina
  • Increasingly or newly incontinent
  • Having recurrent infections (UTI or respiratory)
  • Decreasing communication
  • More disoriented or confused
  • Withdrawing from family and friends
  • Developing new wounds or wounds that do not heal

How do I know if my loved one is in-home hospice eligible?

Elara Caring’s nurses and physicians can assess eligibility status for your loved one. Ask your loved one’s doctor for a referral to Elara Caring or contact your local Elara branch directly.

Why should my loved one choose hospice sooner?

Choosing hospice sooner means more time to fully utilize the benefits that your loved one may be entitled to receive. Hospice provides:

  • Support for the patient and family
  • Physical and emotional comfort
  • Care wherever the patient calls home
  • Symptom and pain management
  • Counseling and respite services
  • Focus on personal goals
  • Minimal disruptions to normal activities
  • Enhanced quality of life

We are here to help you and your family navigate end of life. Contact us today to talk about eligibility and care options in your area.
