Wanda is 76 years old and is adjusting to life after losing her husband. Her daughter lives nearby and visits often, and Wanda loves spending time with her grandchildren. Before her health changed, she stayed active by going to the senior center, volunteering at church and spending time with friends.
A few weeks ago, Wanda bought a new pair of shoes she really liked. But the shoes didn’t fit quite right. Over time, they put pressure on her heel and caused a wound. The sore became painful and made it hard for her to walk.
Soon, Wanda had to stop going to the senior center and church — two things that brought her joy and helped her stay connected.
Worried about the wound, Wanda went to her doctor. She was diagnosed with a serious pressure injury on her heel. Because she also has other health conditions, like high blood pressure and heart disease, healing may take more time and care.
Her doctor recommended in-home care to help treat the wound and support healing.
A nurse now visits Wanda at home to clean and treat the wound and teach her how to care for her skin. Through the CLEAR program, Wanda is learning how to protect her skin and prevent future wounds.
Her daughter is also learning how to help, including how to change bandages, watch for signs of infection and support her mom each day. Physical therapy is helping Wanda regain strength and improve her mobility so she can walk more safely.
With in-home care, Wanda is on the path to healing. She’s looking forward to getting back to the activities she loves and spending time with family again. For patients like Wanda, in-home care brings support, confidence and the ability to stay independent at home.
Wounds and skin concerns can affect comfort, mobility and overall health—especially after a hospital stay, illness or with ongoing conditions like diabetes or limited mobility. Without the right care, small issues can quickly become more serious.
