Mind Your Meds: Simple Steps for Safer Health
Staying on top of your medications is crucial for maintaining your health and ensuring your treatments work effectively. Learn how managing your medications empowers you to take control of your wellbeing.
Read the Label
Your medication labels are packed with valuable information. Be sure to:
- Pay attention to warning stickers. These often provide instructions on whether to take your medication with or without food.
- Check the expiration date. Expired medications may lose effectiveness or even become harmful.
- Be aware of side effects. Some medications, especially pain relievers, can cause drowsiness or dizziness. Use assistive devices and take extra caution when on these medications.
Be in the Know
Staying organized and informed about your medications helps you manage your health more effectively.
- Keep a list of your current medications and allergies. Don’t forget to include over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal remedies and supplements. Even natural remedies can cause interactions.
- “Bag” your list. For frequently changing medications, write each one on an index card and store them in a resealable plastic bag. Add or remove cards as needed to keep your list up to date.
- Use medication apps. Trusted apps from Google Play Store or Apple Store can remind you when it’s time to take your medication and help you stay organized.
Medication Matters
Following best practices for medication use can improve safety and effectiveness.
- Never take medication prescribed for someone else. Dosages vary, and interactions with your other medications can be risky.
- Report side effects. There may be an alternative medication available that works better for you.
- If you use a med-minder (pill sorter), keep the original bottle with at least one pill inside for easy identification if needed.
- Control costs. If your medication is too expensive, ask your pharmacist or doctor about generics, coupons or discounts.
- Dispose of medications safely. Instead of flushing them, mix unused meds with unpleasant trash like coffee grounds or kitty litter and throw them away. Many communities also offer “Drug Take Back” programs for secure disposal.
Timing Matters
Establishing a routine can prevent medication errors.
- Take your medication at the same time every day. This consistency helps your care provider track its effectiveness.
- Don’t double up if you miss a dose. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular schedule. If unsure, consult your Elara Caring home care team or doctor.
- Plan ahead for refills. Avoid gaps in your medication schedule by refilling prescriptions before you run out.
Keep Everyone on the Same Page
Good communication with your healthcare team ensures safer medication management.
- Inform all your healthcare providers of your current medications. This helps prevent harmful interactions.
- Use the same pharmacy for all prescriptions. Your pharmacist can catch issues such as duplicate medications, drug allergies or multiple medications for the same condition.
