Maintaining a Healthy Heart During a Pandemic

We should always strive to maintain a healthy heart. It’s especially important, though, as we navigate life during the COVID-19 pandemic. Increased stress, anxiety and changes to our daily routines can impact blood pressure and lead to an increased risk of heart disease and other conditions.

Adapting healthy habits may be simpler than you think. By taking a few minutes out of your day to prioritize your mental and physical health, you can protect your heart (and other vital organs) from disease.

Try the following:

  • Aim to exercise for 20-30 minutes a day. Go for a walk, participate in a virtual exercise class, clean your house or shovel snow, play outside with your kids or dog – any way you can, move your body.
  • Find your Zen. Take a break each day to pause and give your brain a break. Use a meditation app or a guided meditation on YouTube to close your eyes, focus on your breathing and be still. This will help recharge your mind and relax your body.
  • Connect with others. Though we’re still observing COVID-19 protocols and social distancing, technology allows us to maintain connections to our friends and family via texting, phone calls and video chats. Keeping in touch with our loved ones is as important as ever.
  • Fuel your body. It’s been tough for many to maintain a good diet throughout the pandemic. Start by swapping one meal or snack for a healthier option. Leafy greens, whole grains, berries, fish and nuts are foods that will support heart health and keep your energy up.
  • Talk to a professional. If you need support, many mental health providers offer virtual visits now. Reach out to one if you need a help managing your stress, anxiety or other mental health issues.
  • Keep your appointments. Don’t delay any important appointments with your physicians, such as cardiac check-ups or lab work. Mask up, wash or sanitize hands frequently and complete these visits as needed. Be sure to follow your physician’s recommendations for treatment afterward.

If you or your loved one needs additional support managing health in the home, Elara Caring can help. Visit our home care locations page to find the branch nearest you  and learn more about the right home care services for them. Contact us or email info@elara.com for more information.
