The Heart of the Matter: Practical Ways to Show Your Heart Some Love

Whether you’re managing a chronic condition or simply looking to improve your overall wellbeing, small changes can make a big difference for your heart health. Let’s explore some practical ways to keep your heart in top shape.

Mind Your Meds

  • If you’re managing blood pressure, cholesterol or heart failure, consistency with medication is key. Skipping doses can lead to health declines, increased hospital visits and a more rapid progression of heart failure.
  • Certain cardiac medications can interact negatively with over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, or even foods. Always consult your doctor about potential interactions to ensure your medication is working safely and effectively.

Manage Your Menu

  • Your heart thrives on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids and fiber-filled whole grains. These foods support cardiovascular health and overall vitality.
  • Sodium intake should be limited to 1,500 mg per day. Common sources of hidden sodium include canned goods, processed foods, deli meats, chips and sauces. Even skipping the saltshaker can make a big difference!

Be a Quitter

  • Quitting smoking can add years to your life. We understand it’s a challenge, but there are many resources available to help, including medications, counseling and support groups. Speak with your doctor to find a cessation plan that works for you.

Family Matters

  • If heart disease runs in your family, you may be at a higher risk. The good news? Awareness empowers prevention. Regular check-ups can help detect issues early, allowing for timely intervention and lifestyle adjustments.

All Things in Moderation

  • Indulging in your favorite foods is okay—just practice portion control. Savor each bite, eat slowly and make treats an occasional delight rather than a daily habit.

Safety in the Numbers

  • Knowing key health numbers can help you maintain heart health. Regular check-ups with your doctor can guide you in making necessary lifestyle adjustments. Keep track of:
    • Cholesterol levels
    • Average blood pressure
    • Daily sodium intake
    • Routine lab work
  • Don’t know your numbers? Schedule an appointment with your doctor today.

Get Moving—But Not So Fast!

  • Physical activity is crucial, but jumping straight into an intense workout can be risky. Always consult your doctor before beginning a new exercise routine.
  • Not a fan of traditional workouts? That’s okay! Movement can come in many forms—dancing, gardening, walking, cleaning, or even raking leaves. The key is to stay active in a way that suits your lifestyle.

Small, consistent changes can lead to a stronger, healthier heart—and a better quality of life.

At Elara Caring, our in-home care team is here to support you on your health journey. Have questions? Email us or contact your local team today.
